EARLY DAYS

What was your childhood like? Did you play sports?

I was always the 'lanky' skinny guy growing up, super slim and tall and always struggled to gain weight. Your typical ectomorph. In my childhood I avoided the typical sports like rugby, football and athletics, and really wasn't a sporty person at all. I first found my love for fitness with karate. I trained from the age of 6 for over 12 years, this encouraged discipline and self control and challenged me on a physical and mental level. I was part of the Welsh team for karate and had successfully obtained my 1st Dan black belt and continued to teach other students. Many of the attributes I acquired during my training in karate stayed with me and helped with the transition to bodybuilding. I first started weight training at the age of 21 after my first year in university, I wanted to fill out my frame and a flick just switched that I wasn't going to be that skinny guy anymore. My body responded well to the training and I was up around 10kg after my first 6 months, with little knowledge of nutrition and supplementation. I had the bug and there was no turning back. Over the past 11 years I have enjoyed researching and experimenting with different nutritional and training techniques as well as understanding the science behind supplementation and training styles.

Where did you grow up?

In a small town in South Wales called Caerphilly. It's famous for its cheese and castles.

Who did you look up to?

Arnold (pumping iron of course).

FAMILY

Is your family active and/or into fitness?

No.

Any family members compete or play sports?

No history of sport in the family.

Does your family support your lifestyle?

My parents have always been supportive of anything I'm passionate about and although they don't completely understand the lifestyle they are supportive and proud of what I have achieved to date.

Were they on-board from the beginning or did it take time?

It did take time, my mother especially was always concerned with the volume of food I was eating as well as any supplements I was taking, she would be reading the labels of everything I bought, always commenting on why do you need it, what does it do, why are you wasting your money on this… I guess this is why I know so much of the science today… to justify it to my mother in the beginning!

Are you married, engaged, in a relationship?

I'm in a relationship and my girlfriend also competes; we met through a posing seminar for a fitness model show we both did in 2016.

Do you have kids? How many and what ages?

No kids.

Animals? How many and what kind?

I have a Pug called Dexter who's 3 years old. He's a tad on the chubby side; he's in off-season too.

INTRO TO FITNESS

When did you first get introduced to fitness?

2007.

Who made the intro?

Self-made introduction to get fit and healthy and improve overall strength and appearance.

Did you like it at first?

Like a duck to water, loved it from day 1.

What made you decide to pursue it?

Having body issues with being too tall and thin I thought it was time to make a change.

What was your goal when you first stepped into the gym?

To get fit and healthy and improve overall strength and appearance.

IMPACT OF FITNESS

How do you feel fitness has changed your life?

With the physical changes that came with fitness and weightlifting this progression reflected into my working life. The additional confidence gained has allowed me to develop into the person I am today and aided with career progression to achieve my current job title of Technical Manager for a global medical device company. Ever day I work on large scale projects for new product developments impacting and improving the lives of people world wide.

What are your goals now compared to when you first started?

My goals when I first started were mainly physical and aesthetic, but for me now it's a lifestyle and I aim to achieve a world class physique and love the challenge of pushing myself physically and mentally to sculpt, adapt, and improve my physique year to year.

COMPETITORS

Why compete?

Gave myself a challenge to make it to stage before my 30th birthday.

Was that your plan from the beginning? If no, how did it happen?

I never planned to compete, I just loved training and eating well and learning how my body responded. I got myself in a position where I thought my physique could be worthy of the stage and decided to push it to the next level to see what could be achieved.
