Getting to Know Valerie:

As a child, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?

I wanted to work with animals; be a vet or work for animal rescue. I've always loved animals!

How/when did you decide to start fighting?

I was in a juvenile center from the age of 13 to 15 because I have HADD and I had anger issues. I started to play different sports there and it really helped me to control myself better and focus better. When they felt I was ready to leave, they highly recommend me to keep doing sports. I chose to do Kickboxing and fell in love with Martial Arts.

Why "Trouble"?

LOL Well, because of my HADD and my past. I'm a clumsy person too. I used to lose my phone almost every month. I am a lot better now, but Trouble is always going to stay!

What is your training schedule?

2 to 3 times a day, 6 days a week. A mix of Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, and conditioning

What is the most rewarding about your career?

I did many premieres in Women Mix Martial Arts (I was the first woman to fight in Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec). However, my biggest accomplishment was to sign with the UFC and fight for the belt in the biggest event of its history in Melbourne. It's been an amazing experience!

What is the most grueling about your career?

I love what I do; I love everything about training. What is the most grueling time is the weight cut we go through before the fights.

Do you have a certain ritual that you perform before you get into the ring?

I surround myself with people that make me happy and make me smile; this is when I perform at my best.

Are people intimidated by you?

A lot of people don't understand, and that's fine. I feel as though athletes are the only ones who are not intimidated by what I do because they can relate to the passion that they have for their own sports. The rest just think we like to beat up people…

What should others know about you?

I'm a mother of a beautiful 13-year-old daughter and she's my biggest motivation to be successful in whatever I do.

What are two of your short-term goals?

  1. Open up the flyweight division in the UFC
  2. Become the first flyweight Champion

What is your long-term goal?

To have a family, have more kids, and make the best investment for our future!

What is your favorite quote?

"Think as if you'll live forever; live as if you'll die tomorrow."
